The PLACE Lab

The PLACE lab is focussed on the study of places and spaces. Our research is in spatial cognition, urban design, sense of place, mobility and wayfinding, and we are interested in issues at the interface of Human-Environment-Technology interactions. Studies are inter-disciplinary grounded in theoretical and methodological frameworks from psychology, geography, computer science and philosophy. We are especially interested in understanding how digital technologies are changing the way we interact with spaces and our sense of place, identity and place attachment is being altered. Our focus is on place-making and sense of place. We adopt a cognitive perspective to understand these issues. A better understanding of the way that visual and auditory disengagement and distraction caused by some of these technologies can change mobility and environmental interactions will help us determine designs for better places for the future.
