Edge of Tomorrow at the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2021

Is Your Data Contributing To Climate Change?

On the 27th of November 2021, we will be showcasing our research as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2021. Join us for an interactive story, embodied into an arcade-like machine, in which your choices change the course of the story. Your character, a skilled hacker, will explore the environmental effects caused by their data footprints and the consequences this has on CO2 emissions and the wider ‘state of the world’. After enjoying this game, you can chat with the research team about your experience and the insights you’ve gained from playing. We are looking to get a better understanding of the concepts of the Internet of Things and The Edge and their effects on the natural environment with a focus on the increasing data practices generated by the devices associated with these technologies. Your insights will be greatly appreciated.

This event aims to make the intangible consequences of data choices tangible. These may be the choices we all make as active beneficiaries of using the Internet and therefore producers of data, or they may be the choices made by those who design the infrastructure and systems we use, collecting unnecessary data in the background.

You can find us at Lancaster Castle in the Lancaster Suite.

Date: 27.11.2021.

Time: 10.00 until 16.00.
