We are pleased to offer two funded PhD studentships to work in conjunction within Imagination academics in two areas related to Design in the Internet of Things. These two posts provide not only the opportunity to work with leading design academics but in conjunction with the recently established UK Cyber Security Research Hub for the internet of things which includes nine of the country’s leading universities (PETRAS).
PhD Design Fiction for The Internet of Things
This funded PhD (fees and stipend) will explore the use of Design Fiction as a practice to explore the future of topics such as privacy, ethics, trust, reliability, adoption, and security with the emerging Internet of Things. As the project will involve creating Design Fictions it is ideally suited with to an applicant experienced in 2D and 3D digital design approaches. The student will work with Paul Coulton and Joe Lindley as part of the UK IoT research Hub.
PhD Product/Service Design Processes for The Internet of Things
This funded PhD (fees and stipend) will consider the design processes related to activities that form part of the PETRAS IoT Research Hub Cybersecurity of the Internet of Things. The project will consider how existing new product/service design and development practices need to adapt to this hybrid software/hardware environment. This is ideally suited to a student with design management or new product development knowledge and expertise. The student will work under the supervision of Prof. Rachel Cooper.
Ideally we would like candidates to start as early as possible in 2017 but are prepared to accommodate alternatives for the right candidate. In the first instance please contact either Prof. Paul Coulton or Prof. Rachel Cooperwith an expression of interest.
Candidates should possess a degree (First or 2:1) and a preferably a masters degree in design or related field. Full applications are through the Lancaster University Admissions Portal and please indicate on the application you are specifically applying for one of these studentships and the associated supervisor.
