Monika is visiting fellow at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Bielefeld, Germany, studying interconnections between (professional) practices of ‘communicating disasters’ and mobile living in public spaces. How are transformations of privacy enacted at the intersections of physically and virtually mobile behaviour in public spaces? If one wants to know everyone to know everything about one in a crisis, how can such data sharing be controlled when times are ‘normal’? (How) Does the use of mobile technologies in public contribute to ‘creeping securitization’? And where are emergent socio-technical innovations creating new opportunities for public understanding and new openings for responding to crises (from climate change to natural disasters, and the threat of terrorism)?
