We are looking for a talented designer with the ability to exploit and appropriate Social Media and other web platforms to undertake a fully funded, practice based PhD studentship based in ImaginationLancaster, a leading centre of design research at Lancaster University.

The Opportunity: Applicants will explore how the web can facilitate new collaborations. With a high degree of flexibility, this will involve use of social media platforms such as Facebook, twitter, Linked-in amongst others. The precise platforms used and how they connect to stakeholders will be an important component of the research undertaken. Interventions that use and appropriate these platforms will share tools and toolboxes developed in other part of the Leapfrog project as well as offering possibilities of new collaboration in their own right. This is an opportunity to work at one of the UKs prominent design research centres in a real world context with a wide range of partners and have a real impact on creativity in the public sector.
The Applicant: The successful applicant will have a good first degree, a postgraduate degree and/or equivalent research experience in a field relevant to design for interaction, communication design or engagement or another relevant field. This could be a degree in, for example, Multimedia, Interaction Design, User Experience Design, HCI. The successful applicant will have the ability to make and test their ideas through real world deployment exploiting the possibilities of existing online platforms (e.g. Facebook, Linked in, Twitter).
The Team: This PhD appointment is an important element of a 3 year AHRC funded project titled “Leapfrog: Transforming Public Service Consultation by Design”. Led by Dr. Leon Cruickshank at Lancaster University, this is a collaborative project between Lancaster University and the Glasgow School of Art. The applicant will be working closely with other specialist PhD students, researchers and staff to enable creative exchanges between communities and our public sector partners.
The Big Picture: Overall the Leapfrog project will develop new creative tools, techniques and approaches for creative collaboration and engagement. This will involve working with community groups, public sector bodies and citizens to develop and test these new ways of working with public services. Although based at Lancaster, the successful candidate will conduct research in both Lancashire and occasionally the Scottish Highlands.
